What is Free Gingival Graft Application?
Free gingival graft application is a surgical procedure performed to increase the amount of reduced gum around the tooth root or implant. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. With the free gingival graft, the gingival tissue (graft) taken from the palate, which is the roof of the mouth, is placed in the area where the gum has decreased.
While the area on the palate from which the gum has been removed is covered with a protector, personalized plaques are preferred with today's technology. Plaque application aims to protect the wound area on the palate from food residues and to accelerate the healing process by renewing the tissue itself. The recovery period is usually fast and the stitches are removed after an average of 7-10 days.
It takes about 6-8 weeks for the transferred tissue to completely fuse with the tissue in the recipient area. Patients should follow the dentist's recommendations after the procedure and take care to keep the area clean. Foods that are not hot should be consumed and excessively spicy foods should be avoided. The grafted area should not be brushed or flossed. Gingival graft application should be performed by a specialist in Periodontology.
