FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the basic ways to protect oral and dental health?

Everyone wants to have healthy-looking, white teeth. However, this is usually not possible if proper care is not taken to clean them. To have healthy teeth, it is necessary to brush them regularly every day, as recommended by dentists.

To have healthier and more beautiful teeth, it is possible to prevent tooth decay by following our suggestions below. You can maintain healthy teeth with regular dental examinations, a healthy diet, brushing for 2-3 minutes at least twice a day, consuming less sugary food, and using dental floss.

What are the common conditions that cause bleeding gums?

One of the most common dental problems seen in society is bleeding gums. Bleeding gums, which can be related to oral hygiene habits and can also indicate various health problems, should be taken seriously and appropriate treatment measures should be applied sensitively.

  • Using an excessively hard toothbrush, incorrect and pressurized tooth brushing, or not maintaining adequate oral hygiene.
  • Dentures or dental prosthetics; if they are not suitable for the mouth structure, they may cause damage to the gums.
  • Edema and bleeding caused by hormonal changes during pregnancy. • Inflammation of the gums. • Inflammation of the periodontal tissue that connects the tooth to the surrounding jaw bones and gums.
  • Vitamin deficiencies.
  • Smoking.
  • In diabetes, the gums lose their normal tissue properties and become prone to bleeding.
  • Poor eating habits caused by incorrect consumption of hard and shelly foods.

Are Dental Implants Lifelong Permanent?

People who pay attention to oral hygiene and have regular medical check-ups can use dental implants for many years. It is also important that the implant treatment is successful so that the implants can be used for a long time. For this, the treatment must be applied by a surgeon experienced in the field, and the care instructions must be followed.

Why should I get implants?

Implant treatments have been a widely preferred method in recent years as they are the closest and most long-lasting method to eliminate missing teeth.

Advantages of the implant:

  • Long-lasting
  • Success of the treatment method
  • Compatibility with prostheses
  • Restoring healthy chewing and speaking functions
  • Stops bone resorption

What is implant treatment?

Implants are artificial tooth roots placed in the jawbone to support dentures. If the bone level in the oral environment is suitable, our patients gain comfort with fixed or removable dentures with implants to replace missing teeth or extracted teeth. In this way, we aim to provide our patients with the ability to eat, speak, and laugh comfortably.

Is pain felt during implant treatment?

Since we apply anesthesia, our patients do not feel pain.

Can every patient get implant treatment?

Implant treatment can be performed on any patient who has completed their growth and development, has no serious health problems, and has sufficient bone tissue.

How long does the implant treatment take?

The duration of implant treatment varies for each patient. Many factors such as the patient's response time to treatment, treatment planning, the number of teeth to be implanted, and the implant treatment method affect the duration of implant treatment.

Implant treatment is generally carried out together with the Periodontal, Prosthetic, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery branches. Before starting the treatment process, the patient undergoes a periodontal examination, and prosthetic and oral and maxillofacial surgery treatments are carried out jointly. The implant is placed surgically, and the structures are left for a healing period of 4 months in the upper jaw and 3 months in the lower jaw. It is a form of treatment that lasts at least 4-5 months, depending on the results of the prosthetic treatment and the overall structure of the patient's mouth.

What should be done before and after implant treatment?

Before implant treatment, we recommend that the oral environment be extremely healthy and that oral hygiene be increased to the highest level. If our patient has a disease related to systemic conditions, precautions are taken and treatments are performed. As a result, we make our patient ready for the operation. After implant treatment, our patient should care for the implant site very carefully and take precautions such as not drinking hot beverages.

Can implant applications be performed with advanced surgical techniques?

Implant applications can be performed with advanced surgical techniques at our oral and dental health center. Zygomatic implants are the recommended technique for patients who cannot receive implants in the upper jaw bone. The All-On-Four implant technique allows dental prostheses to be fixed on the same day on four dental implants placed at specific angles in completely edentulous patients.

At what age should I take my child for an orthodontic examination?

An orthodontic examination should be performed before the child turns 7 years old. Thus, abnormal developments are detected in time and the orthodontist determines the most appropriate time to start treatment. Even if your child is over 7 years old, be sure to take him or her for a checkup and repeat the checkup once a year. An early examination is very useful, and a simple preventive or protective intervention can eliminate the problem before it grows. However, most orthodontic patients generally begin active treatment between the ages of 9 and 14.

What is the most appropriate age for orthodontic treatment? Is there an age limit?

Since the treatment age will vary for each patient, it is not correct to give an exact age. While it is necessary to intervene as early as possible for some jaw disorders, 10 to 12 years of age may be appropriate for some dental disorders. Therefore, it is important to have periodic examinations by a dentist. In some disorders, it is very important not to miss the child's growth spurt.

Your child will grow only once, and this period can only be used orthodontically once; we do not have a second chance. In this way, a surgical operation that may be required in the future is prevented. However, there is no age limit for orthodontic treatments.

Treatment of disorders that can only be corrected by tooth movement is possible without surgery at any age, as long as the tissues surrounding the teeth are healthy. The only thing that changes depending on whether the patient is a child, teenager, or adult is the type of treatment.

Do Braces Decay Teeth?

There is a misconception that braces cause tooth decay. Braces do not rot the teeth; they just create an environment where food residues become more attached. Careful and regular brushing is essential during orthodontic treatment. If cleaned well, no problems will occur.

What Happens If Orthodontic Treatment Is Not Received?

It creates aesthetic, functional, and sometimes psychological problems. People cannot laugh easily. Their oral hygiene deteriorates. Due to the inability to brush the crowded areas well, cavities and bad breath occur. There may also be problems in the jaw joint due to not being able to bite properly. Malocclusions can also lead to abnormal wear of tooth surfaces and damage to supporting bone and gum tissue.

How Long Does Orthodontic Treatment Take?

It all depends on the condition of the disorder and the number of treatment phases. A normal fixed orthodontic treatment takes an average of 2 years. However, there are also disorders that last less than a year or as long as 3-4 years. The duration of skeletal jaw orthopedic treatments, which are performed by taking advantage of the growth and development period, is long in parallel with growth and development.

The duration of treatment is also affected by the cooperation of the patient with their doctor. Compliance with the orthodontist's instructions, using the appliances as required, and maintaining good oral hygiene ensure that the treatment is completed on time.

What is a Zygomatic Implant?

Zygomatic implants are generally applied to patients who cannot receive classical implant treatment in the upper jawbone due to factors such as gum diseases, long-term use of prostheses, early tooth loss, infection, trauma, and tumor resection. The zygomatic implant is placed in the zygoma bone, also known as the zygomatic bone.

The treatment is performed under general anesthesia. The biggest advantage of zygomatic implant treatment is that it offers a solution for patients who cannot receive classical implants due to insufficient upper jawbone. The poor aesthetic appearance caused by lips collapsing as a result of long-term bone loss can be eliminated with this treatment method.

Physician selection in zygomatic implant treatment greatly affects the success of the treatment. Since it is not a treatment method applied as frequently as classical implant treatments, it should be performed in full-fledged dental hospitals by surgeons who are experts in zygomatic implant treatment.

Can Tooth Extraction Be Performed During Pregnancy? In Which Months Can It Be Done?

Tooth extraction is not performed during pregnancy unless it is very urgent. In the first three months of pregnancy, care is taken to avoid tooth extraction. Since the formation phase of the fetus takes place in the first three months, treatment is applied to relieve the patient's toothache, if any, during this period. After pregnancy, aches and pains may occur in the teeth. Due to hormonal changes, gum disorders called pregnancy gingivitis may occur. In such cases, the treatment of patients is postponed until after pregnancy.

How Many Teeth Can Be Extracted in the Same Session?

When do the swelling and edema disappear after tooth extraction?

The time it takes for swelling and edema to subside after tooth extraction may vary depending on the extent of the operation. Swelling and edema that usually occur after tooth extraction typically disappear within 3 to 5 days after taking precautions.

When is an implant placed after tooth extraction?

An implant after tooth extraction can be applied in the same session for some patients, while for others, the implant can be placed 2 months after bone formation is completed following wound healing.

Can an infected tooth be extracted?

Generally, an infected tooth cannot be extracted immediately, but it can be removed safely after antibiotic prophylaxis.

What is Digital Smile Design?

It is a treatment method in which the color and shape deformities, disproportions, or tooth discoloration that can be seen in the person's teeth and gums are planned in line with the person's expectations and needs. The result can be shown to the person in advance without any application on the teeth. This process is called "digital smile design" because the planning and designs are done entirely in a digital environment.

What is the eruption period of milk teeth?

The appearance of the milk tooth usually occurs around 6 months when the two lower front middle incisors erupt. Generally, the eruption of the lower front middle 2 incisors is followed by the upper front middle incisors, then the lateral incisors, first milk molars, milk canine teeth, and second milk molars, respectively. It takes approximately 24 to 36 months for the 20 milk teeth to be fully located in the mouth.

What is gum recession?

Gingival recession is when the root surfaces of the teeth are exposed, and the teeth appear to be elongated. Gum recession is not only an aesthetic problem but can also lead to loss of function and tooth sensitivity.

How Can Tooth Decay Be Prevented?

Tooth decay can be prevented with regular oral care:

  • Regular dental examinations
  • Healthy eating
  • Brushing for 2-3 minutes at least twice a day
  • Consuming fewer sugary foods
  • Using dental floss

What is Preventive Dentistry?

Nowadays, as human life expectancy increases, teeth need to remain healthy and protected in the mouth for a long time. For this purpose, there are protective practices that need to be implemented regardless of age group.

Can Fallen Implants Be Replaced?

When the patient's bone heals, the fallen implants can be placed again in the same area or in another area nearby, depending on whether there is bone resorption or its position relative to other teeth.

What is Arthrocentesis (Jaw Joint) Treatment?

Arthrocentesis is a treatment method in which the jaw joint is washed with sterile liquid to treat jaw joint disorders. Symptoms of jaw joint disorders may include pain when opening or closing the mouth, chewing, clenching, and grinding teeth, as well as pain in the neck and back area, snagging and locking in the jaw, fatigue in the jaw muscles upon waking, difficulty breaking down food while eating, hearing noise from the joint, and tinnitus. Arthrocentesis is also known as jaw joint washing treatment among the public

What are the symptoms of jaw joint disorders?

In order to understand whether you have a jaw joint disorder, you must be examined by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Symptoms of patients with jaw joint disorders generally include:

  • Grinding and clenching of teeth.
  • Constant pain felt in the neck, back, and head area.
  • Difficulties experienced while speaking.
  • Jaw snagging or locking that prevents the mouth from opening.
  • Feeling tiredness and pain in the jaw muscles when you wake up in the morning.
  • Clicking sounds during jaw opening movement.
  • Having difficulty cutting food while eating.
  • Feeling pain during chewing, mouth opening, and yawning movements.

Symptoms do not always mean that jaw joint disease is present. It may also be a stress-related situation, but if it occurs together with other factors, you should be examined by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon without wasting time.

What Should Be Considered in Implant Prostheses?

  • Failure to maintain oral hygiene and poor oral care after implant treatment may cause the treatment to fail and oral health to deteriorate. For cleaning the implant area and implant-supported dentures, dental floss, suitable brushes, and oral irrigators recommended by the dentist should be used.
  • At first, harsh chewing behavior should be avoided and the diet recommended by the dentist should be adapted.
  • Patients with problems such as teeth grinding should inform their physicians.

What are the advantages of Dental Tomography?

  • While the x-ray dose to which the patient is exposed is at an optimal level, the sharpness and homogeneity of the images obtained are at the highest level.
  • Bone tissue and soft tissue, which cannot be visualized and examined in detail with a Panoramic X-ray, can be examined.
  • More than one section can be taken from sagittal, coronal, and axial planes. After the sections are taken, they are re-sliced and restructured with the help of advanced software, allowing the desired area to be viewed from all angles.
  • It allows regional imaging with different FOV (Field of View) area options.
  • It is a widely preferred device for the accurate diagnosis of diseases.
  • If desired, dental panoramic x-ray films can also be taken with the dental volumetric tomography device.

What Should Children and Parents Pay Attention to During Orthodontic Treatments?

  • In orthodontic treatments, there are rules that families and children must follow for the treatment process to proceed successfully.
  • First of all, it is important that the child is willing to receive treatment.
  • Parents should monitor their children carefully throughout the treatment and support, motivate, and help them when necessary.
  • During treatment, appliances should be used as directed, the doctor's recommendations should be followed, and the teeth should be brushed regularly.
  • After starting treatment, the patient undergoes a follow-up examination approximately once a month.
  • At the end of the treatment, the reinforcement appliances used to prevent the teeth from reverting should be used as directed, and control examinations should not be interrupted.

What is Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)?

Bruxism is a condition in which an individual clenches or grinds their teeth while sleeping at night or unconsciously clenches their teeth while awake during the day.

  • Headache in the morning and headache starting from the temples
  • Pain in the jaw, neck, or facial muscles
  • Pain that feels like an earache
  • Cracked or broken teeth
  • Sensitivity or loosening of teeth
  • Tired or cramped jaw muscles or a locked jaw

How Should Wisdom Teeth Be Treated?

Wisdom teeth can generally cause pain, abscess formation, and discomfort because they do not adapt to the jaw structure. If wisdom teeth are impacted, they can damage the roots around them and cause the loss of healthy teeth over time. This can also cause other problems such as tightness in the mouth, an incomplete bite, and misalignment of the teeth.

How is the implant applied?

Before implant treatment, the patient's jawbone suitability, systemic diseases, social habits, and oral and dental hygiene habits are checked by the Maxillofacial Surgery Specialist. The cylindrical implant, available in different sizes and diameters, is surgically placed into the jawbone. • Depending on the number of implants to be applied, it can be done under local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia. After 3-4 months of recovery, a crown is placed as an implant-supported prosthesis. These crowns are usually made of zirconium or metal-supported porcelain.

What is a Fiber Post?

Fiber post application is a process applied to strengthen teeth with excessive material loss before filling or coating and before applying full ceramic porcelains such as zirconium. By strengthening the tooth with fiber rods, the tooth with material loss can be made functional. Thus, tooth loss can be prevented.

What is Repeat Root Canal Treatment?

If inflammation or an abscess occurs under a tooth that has had root canal treatment and causes pain, the process of renewing the canal treatment is called Retreatment. Root canal treatments and repeat root canal treatments are the final stages of the treatment to keep the tooth in the mouth. • Therefore, dental care after root canal treatment and protection of general oral and dental health are very important to prevent infection in the treated tooth.

  • Visit the dentist regularly every 6 months.

What is Braces Treatment?

Braces application is a treatment method that helps the teeth to be placed in the correct positions on the jaw. With this treatment method, crooked teeth and malocclusions are corrected. In this way, it offers a beautiful smile, a healthy oral and dental structure, and a better quality of life for individuals of all ages.

What is Clear Aligner Treatment?

It is a brace-free orthodontic treatment that has begun to be applied as an alternative to braces used to correct or close spaced and crooked teeth. With this method, tooth alignment can be corrected with personalized transparent aligners without the need for annoying braces.

What are the Advantages of Clear Aligner Treatment?

  • Clear aligners are almost invisible, so it is not noticeable that you are wearing a corrective appliance on your teeth. They provide a better aesthetic appearance because they are not noticeable.
  • Clear aligners can be removed at any time for activities such as eating or attending important meetings. Afterward, the patient can reattach them and continue orthodontic treatment.
  • In clear aligner treatment, pain and discomfort are minimized by changing the aligners weekly.
  • Since the aligners can be put on and removed, maintaining oral hygiene is easier.

What is Diastema (Gap Between Teeth)?

Diastemas are small and narrow spaces between two teeth. Diastema, also known as a gap between teeth, may be a congenital issue or may develop later. These gaps, which can cause aesthetic concerns, can also lead to problems with chewing and speaking functions.

How is Diastema Closure Treatment Done?

Orthodontic, filling, or veneer treatments can be applied to address the aesthetic concerns of people with diastema. Generally, aesthetic restorations made of filling material are used to close the diastema. Restorations are selected in a color that matches the person's natural teeth. Depending on the number of teeth to be treated, the procedure is completed in 3-4 hours with local anesthesia.

Gaps between teeth, which can also be covered with porcelain veneers, can be treated on the same day with today's digital dentistry technology. The prosthetic material is adhered with minimal or no abrasion of the tooth. Treatment can also be provided with orthodontic methods such as braces or transparent aligners.

To whom is Implant Treatment Applied?

Implant treatment is a personalized treatment method.

  • People with a single missing tooth
  • People with complete or partial tooth loss
  • Tooth loss due to trauma
  • People with bone resorption problems in the jaw

What is a Sinus Lifting Operation?

In patients who will receive implant treatment, when the posterior teeth of the upper jaw are lost, a certain amount of bone volume is needed to replace these teeth with implants. To increase the reduced amount of bone, a sinus lifting procedure is applied. Thanks to this procedure, the size of the implant that must be fully embedded in the bone is increased, ensuring the creation of sufficient volume for its width.

How is Arthrocentesis (Jaw Joint Washing) Treatment Done?

Arthrocentesis is recommended in cases where there is pain and locking in the jaw joint. With arthrocentesis treatment, a needle is inserted through the upper space of the jaw bone. The sterile saline administered through one needle is allowed to flow through the other needle. By removing the fluids accumulated in the patient's joints, the aim is to sterilize the area and restore function to the jaw.
